ROBERT SCHAD

steel sculptures

Robert Schad's artistic style centres around dialogic interactions between opposing forces. The attempt to reconcile the seemingly irreconcilable is what drives him forward. His sculptures appear to be simultaneously open and closed, dynamic and static, light- and heavyweight, unstable and stable. This is not least dependent on the specific properties of the material used and the way it is processed by the artist. Regardless of their specific attributes - be they wall- or floor-mounted, individual pieces or multi-part works, large-scale indoor pieces, outdoor sculptures that make a major claim on space or small works presented on plinths - all of Schad's sculptural works are made of solid square steel bars with cross-sections ranging from 45 mm to 160 mm, whereby the size of Schad's hand was the determining factor for the smallest bar size.

Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966)

The exhibition in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Český Krumlov presents Giacometti's graphic main cycle from the last eight years of his life Paris without End, an oil painting with a portrait of his beloved brother, exhibits of the artist´s sculpting masterpieces (Striding, 1949, Nude, 1954 and a bust of his brother Diego from 1957) and last but not least a cycle of photographs, in which Ernst Scheidegger (b. 1923), who got to know Giacometti in 1943, captured the artist at work in the studio and in his free time.

This exhibition in Český Krumlov in cooperation with the Kunsthaus Zürich as well as the accompanying catalogue could not have been produced without significant financial support from the Swiss Pro Helvetia Foundation, Komerční banky, p.l.c., the Municipality of Český Krumlov and the Region of South Bohemia. Our grateful thanks are due to all of these institutes and companies. We also thank the Customs Office of the Czech Republic for its very helpful conduct during the processing of the customs documentation for this exhibition which comes from outwith the European Union.

The trilingual accompanying catalogue (88 sides incl. 46 black and white whole page illustrations, 20 photographs and texts ) in Czech / German / English can be ordered through the above-listed contacts at the price of 10 EURO plus postage.

Ernst Scheidegger (b. 1923, Switzerland)

Ernst Scheidegger became acquainted with Alberto Giacometti in 1943 in Maloja. He worked as a freelance journalist for the Magnum agency in Paris, before working from 1960-88 as editor of the weekly supplement of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. From 1962 he directed documentary films about visual and graphic artists as well as numerous film contributions on artistic topics for Swiss Television. In 1962 he also founded his own publishing house with a first book by Jean Genet about Alberto Giacometti.

In 1990 the volume "Traces of a friendship - Alberto Giacometti" appeared. It represented the sum total of Scheidegger´s work on Giacometti. Then in 1993 "The Bergel – Giacometti´s Homeland" came out.

The exhibition presents 22 photographs from Alberto Giacometti´s studio with the friendly permission of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Eva Prokopcová (b. 1948 Český Krumlov)
pictures, drawings, installation

Eva Prokopcová, certainly one of the most talented contemporary South Bohemian artists, attended a stone-cutter school before she studied architecture at Prague University and following that graduated from the Academy of the Graphic and Visual Arts in Prague.
Her first colourful, figurative paintings were replaced, after a personal crisis, by a geometric, grey and flat style which in the end brought her once more to an existential boundary. She forced herself against her convictions to return to colour. There were no longer any figures, however the colours exploded in form. Apart from abstract painting she keeps on creating experimental works with gathered materials which she uses in an untypical way.

Stanislav Kolíbal has ranked amongst the most distinguished members of the Czech art scene since the 1950s; this exhibition prepared in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Český Krumlov is a representative cross-section of his creative work with special emphasis on the latest as yet unexhibited work. The accompanying publication is based on a principle that has been unknown in this country till now. The author comments on his work himself. This manner of interpretation breaks down the borders between the artist and his public thus enabling the viewer to enter the artist's world and get acquainted with his sources of inspiration and the hidden meaning of his individual works. The accompanying publication with more than 300 reproductions and 300 pages in length is tri-lingual (Czech / German / English).
